Sliding temple spectacles were hand made until the invention of the spectacle making machine in 1833. This style frame featured temples that could be retracted to make the entire frame shorter in length. Such frames were popular with people who had to travel. They could be stored in a much smaller case. Examples were made in steel, silver, coin silver, and gold.

Silver sliding temple spectacles with original case. The frames are in good condition. The hinges area bit loose and the sliding temples work well. The case are stamped with the owner's name "C. Sweet Bangor, Ma". The only information I could find on the original owner is that Charles F Sweet ran for mayor of Bangor in 1912. The spectacles date around 1875 and have a weak reading lens. They most likely belonged to Mr. Sweet when he first started to use eyeglasses. Frame width is 4 1/4 inches. Temple length closed is 4, Temple length extended is 6 1/8 inches.
