Beginning in the early 1760's, eyeglasses were made with sliding temples extensions. This style was very popular and continued to be made for more than 100 years. Examples made before 1833 are hand made and rare. Examples made after 1833 were made by machine and because millions were produced, are readily available today. Most frames before 1833 are made from steel. A few examples in coin silver and gold do come to the market from time to time.
