Beginning in the early 1760's, eyeglasses were made with sliding temples extensions. This style was very popular and continued to be made for more than 100 years. Examples made before 1833 are hand made and rare. Examples made after 1833 were made by machine and because millions were produced, are readily available today. Most frames before 1833 are made from steel. A few examples in coin silver and gold do come to the market from time to time.

Pair # 2093-42 is made from brass plated with silver. It has no makers mark and is most likely American made. Many American jewelers copied English goods around the time of the American Revolution. This was against British law. For this reason most such frames are not signed. The double lens frame was invented by Dr. Richardson, a London optician, in 1795. This pair most likely dates to between 1800 and 1810. These frames are in excellent condition.
