About Universal Optical

Universal Optical started in Providence, Rhode Island in 1911. Their styles used high quality materials and fashionable styles. Some of their glasses for men and women included:

  • Antique Gold Rim Glasses
  • Women’s Cat Eye Glasses
  • Aviator Glasses

But it is the Mansfield Square F770 that Universal Optical is best known for. First produced at the beginning of the 1940s, most people recognize these iconic frames as the ones James Dean wore in Rebel Without a Cause, a look that defined a generation of men’s style. JFK, Marlon Brando, and Truman Capote also wore this model as eye and sunglasses.

The Mansfield Square F770 has a thick, horn rim frame made from black acetate. The top of the frames are squared with a curved lower edge and keyhole bridge. This style is highly similar to – and often mistaken for – Ray-Ban Wayfarers or Tart Arnel glasses, but there are slight differences in the shape. The rivets connecting the temples and frames are hourglass-shaped.

From antique wire-rim glasses to the iconic Mansfield Square glasses, vintage glasses from Universal Optical are a fun addition to your eyewear collection, complete your James Dean costume, or gift to a classic film lover.
